The CDC says the real number is likely far higher. It estimates about 29 undetected cases for every confirmed one, according to Food Safety News.

When investigators interviewed 27 patients, 26 said they had eaten sprouts or microgreens, the FDA reported in its September 24 update.

How was the outbreak traced to seeds?

On September 4, Evergreen Fresh Sprouts of Moyie Springs, Idaho, recalled broccoli sprouts after a Montana state sample tested positive. Whole genome sequencing matched the bacteria to the outbreak strain.

The FDA then collected seeds from the seed supplier. A sample tested positive for the outbreak strain, and the supplier recalled the lot. That lot, W4105, ties together several of the seed recalls.

The FDA has not publicly named the supplier, Food Safety News reported.

What should I do with recalled seeds?

  • Don't sprout, eat, serve or sell recalled seeds or sprouts.
  • Throw them out or return them for a refund.
  • Clean and sanitize jars, trays, lids and counters that touched them.
  • See a doctor if you get sick after eating sprouts or handling the seeds.

What are the symptoms of Salmonella?

Symptoms usually start 12 to 72 hours after exposure and last four to seven days, the FDA says:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps

Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.

Why are sprouts risky?

Sprouts grow in warm, humid conditions that also let bacteria multiply quickly. If seeds are contaminated, the bacteria can spread through a whole batch, and sprouts are often eaten raw.

This outbreak is being investigated separately from another outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella linked to alfalfa sprouts, the FDA says.
