Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUVs from the 2023 to 2026 model years because the high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a fire. Until a repair is ready, owners are being told to charge to a maximum of 80%.

There is no fix yet. Volkswagen says the remedy is still being developed, and interim warning letters are due around November 27, 2026.

What is wrong with the ID.4?

Volkswagen Group of America told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the ID.4's high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a vehicle fire. NHTSA's summary adds that "a vehicle fire increases the risk of injury."

The public recall summary doesn't spell out the root cause or how many fires have been reported.

Why the 80% charging limit?

NHTSA's recall record says: "Owners are advised to only charge their vehicles to a maximum of 80% battery capacity until the repair has been completed."

A lower state of charge puts less stress on battery cells. It's a common stopgap in EV battery recalls while a permanent repair is worked out. You can set a charging limit in the ID.4's charging settings or the Volkswagen app.

How do I know if my ID.4 is included?

Not every 2023–2026 ID.4 is part of the recall. Enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Affected VINs have been searchable since October 6, 2026. Our step-by-step recall check guide shows where to find the VIN.

What happens next?

The repair will be free. Volkswagen customer service is 1-800-893-5298.

Is this part of a wider wave of EV battery recalls?

Battery-related recalls with interim charging or parking limits have become a familiar pattern. This month, Hyundai also told older Genesis sedan owners to park outside over a seat-motor fire risk, though that problem isn't battery-related.

The ID.4 recall is listed with others in our October 2026 car recalls roundup.
