Two people were killed and five others were wounded in a shooting at Seattle Center on Sunday evening, while the Bite of Seattle food festival was underway on the grounds beneath the Space Needle.
Seattle police officers arrived just after 6 p.m. Pacific. The Seattle Fire Department said two people were declared dead at the scene. Four others were taken to Harborview Medical Center. A fifth injured person, with minor wounds, declined to go to the hospital.
Mayor Katie Wilson said in a statement Sunday night that police had taken a suspect into custody.
What officials have confirmed
The victims. Harborview spokesperson Susan Gregg said one adult woman was in surgery and in critical condition. The three other patients — reported as a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman — were in satisfactory condition. All of the hospital's patients had gunshot wounds, with injuries to the arm, leg, abdomen and lower leg.
The suspect. One person is in custody. Wilson's office initially said two people had been detained and corrected the statement roughly 45 minutes later. Police had not released a name, age or any description as of this writing.
The investigation. The Seattle Police Department is leading it. ATF agents responded to the scene, and Gov. Bob Ferguson said a state SWAT team was dispatched at SPD's request.
What is not known
No motive has been established. Police have not said whether the shooting grew out of a dispute, whether anyone was targeted, or whether the festival itself had anything to do with it beyond being the place where it happened.
That gap matters, because it is the space where speculation moves fastest. An event with hundreds of thousands of attendees and a nationally recognizable backdrop invites an assumption about what kind of attack this was. Nobody investigating it has made that claim.
Casualty counts also moved through the evening as agencies updated their own tallies — the Fire Department, the hospital and the police department each count differently, and initial figures in incidents like this routinely shift. The numbers here reflect what was confirmed at the time of writing.
The setting
Seattle Center is the civic campus built for the 1962 World's Fair. It holds the Space Needle, Climate Pledge Arena — home of the Kraken and the Storm — the Pacific Science Center and the Museum of Pop Culture. It is one of the most heavily visited public spaces in the Pacific Northwest.
The Bite of Seattle, an annual food festival with vendors and live music, ran July 24–26 this year, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Organizers expected more than 350,000 people across the three days. The shooting came roughly two hours before the festival's final close.
Witnesses described the crowd's reaction as instant and total. Earl Brewster, a chef working the event, told KNKX he heard shots just before his shift began: "It was so crazy. I was like running. I was like caught up with some man and his daughter. I'm like pulling her. I'm caught in her purse and clothes. Like this is insane."
Nick Bate told KIRO 7 he "thought there were fireworks, and then everybody flooded and ran past us." Leanne Coles told the station she ran with the crowd through the garden: "I looked up for the Space Needle to try to keep track of where we were. It was really scary."
Closures
The Seattle Center Monorail shut down for the remainder of Sunday and was set to resume service Monday at 7:30 a.m. The Pacific Science Center said it would be closed Monday, with general admission shows canceled.

Wilson's statement pointed to the aftermath most people outside the immediate families will not see. "We know that many people who were not physically injured will carry what they experienced today for a long time," she wrote — witnesses, workers, first responders, and everyone who spent Sunday evening waiting to hear whether someone they love was safe.
