The Rivian R2 starts at $57,990 for the launch Performance version, with the Premium at $53,990 and the Standard at $48,490, according to pricing Rivian announced in March 2026. A cheaper, smaller-battery version is expected to start around $45,000 at the end of 2027.

The R2 is Rivian's smaller, cheaper electric SUV, sitting below the R1S. It's already helping sales: Rivian beat delivery forecasts in the third quarter, and The Drive credited the R2 with bringing in more price-conscious buyers.

The most range per dollar Standard, $48,490 (2027)

With the federal EV tax credit no longer available for new purchases, the sticker price is the real price for most buyers.

How is the R2 helping Rivian's sales?

Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles in the third quarter, The Drive reported, ahead of the roughly 18,000 analysts expected. To hit its 2026 goal of 65,000 to 75,000, Rivian needs about 23,000 more deliveries before the year ends.

Cox Automotive ranked Rivian the No. 2 EV brand in the U.S. in Q3, behind Tesla. Its sales were up 46% year over year. More in our Q3 2026 EV sales report.

What AI features are coming?

Rivian already has an in-house AI assistant that controls vehicle features by voice. At TechCrunch Disrupt, as reported on October 15, CEO RJ Scaringe said future Rivians will be able to run AI agents from other companies, calling that "where it becomes magical."

He gave no date. Rivian promised more at an AI & Autonomy Day in December. Scaringe said vehicle controls like braking and steering won't be handed to an AI agent.

How does the R2 compare on price?

The R2 Standard's $48,490 starting price is a little below the $55,879 average EV price Kelley Blue Book recorded in September 2026. The $45,000 version would sit well under it.
