The iPhone Duo is the one to buy if you want a phone that turns into a small tablet; the iPhone 18 Pro is better for almost everything else. The Duo costs $1,999 and opens from a 5.4-inch phone into a 7.6-inch screen. The 18 Pro costs $1,199 and has the better cameras, Face ID and a lighter body.

Both run the same A20 Pro chip. The Duo goes on sale October 23, but preorders sold out within minutes and new orders now ship in 2027.

Specs from Apple's comparison page and 9to5Mac.

Which has the better camera?

The iPhone 18 Pro, clearly. It adds a telephoto lens, a variable-aperture main camera and pro video features like ProRes RAW. The Duo's dual 48MP system is good, but it is not Apple's best camera.

Which is easier to live with?

The 18 Pro is 43 grams lighter and thinner, and keeps Face ID. The Duo is compact when closed, roughly like a small wallet, but thick at 11.3 mm. It also uses Touch ID instead of Face ID.

On the other hand, nothing else in Apple's phone lineup gives you a 7.6-inch screen in your pocket, and the Duo will support the USB-C Apple Pencil later this year, according to 9to5Mac.

Can you actually get an iPhone Duo?

Not easily. Preorders sold out on October 16, and US delivery dates jumped into early 2027. Apple Stores were reportedly told to warn customers against relying on walk-in purchases on launch day. We covered the shortage in detail in our iPhone Duo preorder report.

Both phones support Apple's new iPhone Handoff feature, which lets you use one number on two iPhones, but carriers charge for it. See what each carrier charges.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy iPhone Duo if you read, watch video or multitask a lot on your phone and want one device instead of a phone plus an iPad mini. Be ready to wait.
  • Buy iPhone 18 Pro if cameras matter, you want Face ID and a lighter phone, or you need a phone this month. You also save $800.
  • Consider iPhone 18 Pro Max ($1,299) if you want a big screen without folding: 6.9 inches and Apple's longest battery rating, up to 45 hours.
