Santa Monica Studio's God of War: Laufey arrives February 16, 2027, on PlayStation 5, franchise director Cory Barlog announced at San Diego Comic-Con. It will ship on physical discs as well as digitally.
Barlog used the same panel to confirm something else: a second God of War is already in development, starring Kratos, and it connects directly to Laufey's story. No date for that one.
Why announcing both at once matters
Those two announcements are related, and the sequencing is the interesting part.
Laufey is the first mainline God of War not led by Kratos. That is a genuine risk for a series whose identity has been built on one character across two decades and two mythologies — and a portion of the audience has been uneasy about it since the game was revealed.
Confirming a Kratos-led follow-up on the same stage, before Laufey has shipped, reads as a direct answer to that unease. It tells a nervous fanbase that this is an expansion of the series rather than a replacement, and that the character they came for is returning. Studios do not usually announce an unannounced sequel to an unreleased game unless there is a reason to reassure.
Who Laufey is, and when this has to be set
Players already know her, under a different name.
Laufey is Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother — Faye, in God of War (2018). She was already dead when that game began. Her absence is its opening premise and shapes most of what follows through Ragnarök.
Which means a Laufey game can only be a prequel, and its ending is already known to anyone who has played the last two. That is a harder narrative assignment than it sounds: the interest has to come from who she was rather than from what happens to her, and the audience arrives knowing more than the protagonist does.
A very crowded February
The date puts Laufey into what is shaping up as a congested stretch. Kotaku noted the pile-up of major titles in February 2027, and Forbes framed it as Sony and Microsoft playing chicken, with Fable also circling the same window.
Two of the biggest first-party exclusives on either platform landing within weeks of each other is good for nobody except whichever one reviews better. Release dates this far out are also the most movable thing in game publishing — February 2027 is roughly seven months away, and calendars like this one tend to sort themselves out before anyone actually collides.
For now, though, the date is on the board.
