ChatGPT can now see and work inside your open Chrome tabs. OpenAI's upgraded ChatGPT extension for Chrome can compare information across tabs, group and organize them, summarize pages in a sidebar and, with ChatGPT Work, take actions like filling out forms, downloading files or sending messages.

The features are available on all ChatGPT plans, including free, according to Android Authority. OpenAI announced the upgrade on October 15.

What can ChatGPT do in Chrome now?

Feature Example
Use open tabs as context Compare sofa listings across several tabs and rank the best
Act in other tabs (ChatGPT Work) Fill a form, download a file, send a message
Organize tabs Group tabs into categories
Sidebar help Summarize articles and reports, draft emails without switching tabs
Use your history and plugins Pull receipts from Gmail and submit them to an expense page

How do you set it up?

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and find the ChatGPT extension. Make sure the publisher is OpenAI.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. Sign in with your ChatGPT account.
  4. Open the sidebar from the extension icon.
  5. Ask it to work with the page or your open tabs, for example: "Compare the prices in my open tabs."

What should you be careful about?

An assistant that can read tabs and click buttons is powerful, and that cuts both ways:

  • Close sensitive tabs (banking, health, HR) before asking it to work across tabs.
  • Review before submitting anything it fills in.
  • Check permissions in Chrome's extension settings and data controls in ChatGPT.
  • At work, follow your company's AI policy. Many IT teams restrict personal AI accounts.

Why does this matter?

It brings the "AI agent" idea into the browser most people already use, rather than asking them to switch to a new AI browser. It also lands the same week Google launched its own shopping agent tools; see how Google's Universal Cart works. For more on the security side of AI agents, read what to know about AI hacking.
