Is Whalefall a True Story? The Real Book, and the Real Whale Encounters, Behind Josh Brolin's Survival Thriller

No, Whalefall isn't a true story. It's based on Daniel Kraus's 2023 novel, though real divers have briefly ended up inside whales' mouths. Here's the story.

No, Whalefall is not a true story. Brian Duffield's survival thriller, starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, is adapted from Daniel Kraus's 2023 novel of the same name, about a young diver swallowed by a sperm whale.

There are real cases of divers ending up briefly inside a whale's mouth, but nobody has been documented surviving inside a sperm whale, as the film's hero must.

What is Whalefall about?

Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) is a scuba diver searching the seabed for the remains of his father, Mitt (Josh Brolin). Then a sperm whale swallows him whole. Trapped inside, with a limited air supply, he has roughly an hour to escape, and the film cuts between his ordeal and memories of his complicated relationship with his father.

Boxoffice Pro noted that early reactions called the premise "stressful," which is clearly the point.

Is Whalefall based on a book?

Yes. Daniel Kraus, the horror novelist who co-wrote The Shape of Water novel with Guillermo del Toro, published Whalefall in 2023. It was praised for grounding its outlandish premise in detailed marine biology. Kraus co-wrote the screenplay with Duffield.

Has anyone really been swallowed by a whale?

Briefly, and never by a sperm whale. The best-known cases:

Year Person What happened
2019 Rainer Schimpf, South Africa A diver caught for a moment in a Bryde's whale's mouth during a sardine run, then released
2021 Michael Packard, Cape Cod A lobster diver who said a humpback whale held him in its mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting him out
2025 A kayaker in Chile's Strait of Magellan Briefly engulfed by a humpback whale and released unharmed, in a moment caught on video

Humpbacks and Bryde's whales feed on small fish and krill and can't physically swallow a person. Sperm whales, which eat giant squid, have throats wide enough, but there is no verified survivor. The 1891 tale of sailor James Bartley surviving inside a sperm whale is widely regarded as a myth.

How did Whalefall do at the box office?

Not well. It opened to about $8 million, fourth place, on a reported $60 million budget. For the full weekend, see our box office report.

Where can I watch Whalefall?

In theaters only, for now. As a 20th Century Studios film, it would normally move to digital rental and then to Disney's streaming services, but no dates have been announced.
