Morgan Wallen released "Been By Now" on Friday, his first solo single of 2026 and the end of a tease that ran most of the summer.
The track was written by Wallen with Charlie Handsome, John Byron, Blake Pendergrass, Rocky Block and Taylor Phillips, and produced by Joey Moi, who has worked on essentially all of Wallen's major records.
It came together in about half an hour
By Wallen's account, the song arrived almost fully formed. Charlie Handsome played an instrumental he had been working on, and the melodies followed within roughly 30 minutes. "We wrote the song really fast," Wallen said, and it is the melodies he has singled out as the part he likes most.
The subject is less cheerful than the arrangement suggests. Wallen has described it as a song about looking at a long-term partner and understanding that the relationship is not moving forward — the music, as he put it, feels a little happy while the message is overwhelmingly sad. That gap between sound and sentiment is a well-worn country trick, and it is doing most of the work here.
The rollout was unusually messy
Wallen shared a snippet in early June. A longer portion of the song then leaked on TikTok, which raised a real question about whether the release would survive the exposure. It did.
He also teased a piano version with the caption "Maybe I'll release this one before the boats get winterized" — a joke at his own expense. In 2024 he described "Love Somebody" as a song that would sound good on the boat, teased it in May, and then released it in October, by which point boat season was over.
The live debut came on the opening night of his stand at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, where he announced the release date from the stage.
He doesn't know what it's leading to
The most revealing thing Wallen said in Baltimore was not about the song.
"I just had a few weeks off tour, so y'all know me, I can't help but work a little bit," he told the crowd. "I've been in the studio working on my… whatever's next." He continued: "I don't exactly know what's gonna be next yet. But I do know that this song I'm about to play right now is gonna be my very next single."
That is a lead single released before its artist has decided what it is leading. For a performer at Wallen's scale — "Last Night" is the longest-running No. 1 country song in Billboard Hot 100 history — it is a workable strategy rather than a problem, and it is increasingly the norm: release singles when they are ready, decide later whether they add up to an album.
Wallen has flirted with sounds outside country in recent years, including house-leaning production, which leaves open the possibility that the next phase is a run of releases rather than a conventional record.
