Disney's live-action Moana starts streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. It is included with a Disney+ subscription, so you won't need to pay extra to watch it.

The remake opened in theaters in July 2026, starring newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson back as Maui.

When does live-action Moana come out on Disney+?

October 21, 2026. The date appears in Disney+'s October schedule and was reported by Laughing Place, TVLine and Boston.com. It shares the day with ABC and Disney+'s live tribute special to Dolly Parton.

That is roughly three months after the theatrical debut, a typical gap for Disney's big releases.

How can I watch live-action Moana?

You have two options:

  1. Stream it on Disney+ from October 21. It is part of the standard subscription, including bundles that include Disney+.
  2. Buy or rent it digitally. The film had a digital release after its theatrical run, so it is also available on the major storefronts.

Who is in the live-action Moana cast?

Actor Role
Catherine Laga'aia Moana
Dwayne Johnson Maui
John Tui Chief Tui, Moana's father
Frankie Adams Sina, Moana's mother
Rena Owen Gramma Tala
Jemaine Clement Tamatoa (voice)

Auli'i Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, is an executive producer rather than playing the role again. Johnson is the only lead from the animated films who returns in the same part.

How did live-action Moana do at the box office?

It was solid but not spectacular. Trade coverage, including NBC's entertainment desk and The Hollywood Reporter, described its theatrical run as underwhelming compared with Disney's biggest live-action remakes. That reception makes its streaming debut all the more important: Disney's family titles often find their biggest audiences on Disney+.

What is live-action Moana about?

The story mirrors the 2016 film. Moana, the daughter of a Polynesian chief, sets out across the ocean to find the demigod Maui and restore the stolen heart of the island goddess Te Fiti before a creeping darkness destroys her home.
