Madonna is back on top. Her new studio album "CONFESSIONS II" debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated July 18, earning her 10th career chart-topper and her first No. 1 album of the 2020s, according to Billboard.
The album opened with 134,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 9, per Luminate. Billboard reports that marks the largest week for a dance album this year, as well as Madonna's best week by units since the chart shifted to an equivalent-album-units model in December 2014.
Why it matters
The milestone places Madonna in rarefied company. She becomes the first act with a No. 1 album in the 2020s to have also topped the chart in three earlier decades, and only the fourth artist to notch at least 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and 10 No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 — joining The Beatles, Drake and Taylor Swift.
The sales breakdown reflects a heavily physical-driven rollout. Of the 134,000 units, album sales accounted for 114,000, Madonna's best sales week since 2015, while streaming contributed 19,000 units, equal to 20.1 million on-demand streams and her largest streaming week ever for an album. Vinyl purchases alone reached 59,000, her biggest vinyl week since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991. The set was released across 15 vinyl variants, four CD editions, a cassette and six digital editions.
"CONFESSIONS II" is billed as the sequel to 2005's chart-topping "Confessions on a Dance Floor" and reunites Madonna with that album's key collaborator, producer Stuart Price. It is her first new studio album since 2019's "Madame X" and was preceded by the Hot 100 single "Bring Your Love," a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. The album was announced on April 15 and released July 3.
Elsewhere in the top 10, Olivia Rodrigo held at No. 2, while Ken Carson's "xperiment" and Sienna Spiro's debut "Visitor" entered at No. 7 and No. 9, respectively.
