What happened at Madison Square Garden?
Styles brought the song out during the encore. He performed it as a quiet acoustic ballad with minimal accompaniment, according to Variety.
Before he played, he pointed to a banner in the arena celebrating his earlier run of shows there, and spoke about the friends he had made through his career. "Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends," he said.
He asked the audience to look after one another. "It's just about looking after each other," he said, according to Complex. "Get home safe, tell someone you love that you love them."
After the song, he went back to his usual encore: "Sign of the Times" and "Aperture."
What is "What Is Enough" about?
Styles said he wrote it for Payne. Variety reported that the lyrics refer to Payne's funeral, which took place in England on November 20, 2024, and which Styles attended with the other former members of One Direction.
Many fans said they couldn't make out the words. Styles sang very softly, and Variety reported that both the arena's acoustics and his gentle delivery made the lyrics hard to hear, in the room and on the clips that followed.
Is "What Is Enough" on Spotify or Apple Music?
No. As of Sunday, the song is not on any streaming service, and Styles has not said whether he will release it. The only versions available are videos filmed by fans at the show.
How has Styles honoured Payne before?
At the finale of his 12-night Wembley Stadium residency, Styles named each of his former bandmates, including "my dear friend Liam," Complex reported. Payne's parents, sister and nephew were in the crowd that night.
In March, Styles told Apple Music's Zane Lowe that living fully is the best way to honour friends who have died, according to the same report.
The tour
The Madison Square Garden shows are a 30-night residency running through Halloween, Complex reported, and New York is the only U.S. stop on the Together, Together tour. The tour supports Styles' fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. Jamie xx is opening.
