What is Crystal Lake about?

The series opens in 1972. Pam Voorhees works as a lunch lady at the school and at Camp Crystal, and spends most of her life caring for her sickly son, Jason, who is shunned by the other children, according to Variety's review. When Jason drowns, Pam tries to pull herself out of her grief. Then body parts start turning up in the woods.

It is the origin story the 1980 film only hinted at. "We meet Pamela Voorhees for like 10 minutes" in the original, Kane told The Hollywood Reporter at New York Comic Con. "I feel like you want to know more."

Cardellini said she rewatched the original and was drawn to the fact that Pamela "is the original killer. There is a story there as to how she gets to that place."

Is Jason in it?

Yes, as a boy, played by Callum Vinson. Kane told THR the show includes "shot-for-shot" recreations of scenes from the films, but no hockey mask, which did not appear until 1982's Friday the 13th Part III.

He also promised fans plenty of horror: "we drop a lot of bodies in really creative ways. It's a lot more brutal."

Is Crystal Lake good?

Critics are mostly positive, with reservations.

  • Variety called it "thoughtful though overlong" and said it "offers a new take on Jason's horrifying beginnings while honoring the lure of the classic film."
  • TV Guide gave it 6.3 out of 10, calling Cardellini "an entertaining antihero" but the show a "by-the-book franchise prequel."
  • The Hollywood Reporter's review headline called it the best Friday the 13th property yet, "which isn't saying a lot."
  • On Rotten Tomatoes, it had an 83% critics' score from 36 reviews as of October 13, Forbes reported. For comparison, the 1980 original sits at 48%.

A long road to Peacock

A Friday the 13th series has been talked about for two decades. The CW developed one and passed in 2016. A24 and Peacock announced Crystal Lake in October 2022 with Bryan Fuller as showrunner, but he was let go in May 2024 after A24 chose a different direction for the show. Brad Caleb Kane, showrunner of It: Welcome to Derry, took over that August.

Filming began on June 20, 2025, in New Jersey under the working title Mama's Boy, including at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, the same Boy Scout camp that played Camp Crystal Lake in the original film.

The series is also a coda for Victor Miller, who wrote the 1980 film and was an executive producer on the show. He died in September at 86. In 2021 a federal appeals court ruled that Miller could reclaim the U.S. rights to his original screenplay.

Where to watch it outside the U.S.

In the UK and Ireland, the series is expected on Sky Atlantic and NOW. In parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East it is set for HBO Max.

What to watch

A second season. Peacock has not announced one.

The movies. Crystal Lake ends where the 1980 film begins, so expect a lot of viewers to go back to the original next.
