Jon Bon Jovi ended Bon Jovi's Madison Square Garden concert after about 90 minutes on Thursday night, telling a packed arena that he could not finish the show and would try to make it up to them.
"Don't throw away your ticket stubs, I'm gonna figure something out, OK?" he told the crowd. "Just hold onto it, we'll figure out how to reschedule." He added: "But I'm gonna have to cool it for the night. I feel great. I'll see you again soon, goodnight."
He was blunter earlier in the night about why. "I'm hurt and you're not getting the best of me," he told the crowd, according to Consequence.
He hugged his bandmates and gave the crowd a thumbs up before walking off. The set ran roughly 15 songs.
A spokesperson for Bon Jovi later told Rolling Stone that the singer "has been battling a sinus infection which led to the show's early ending," adding that Bon Jovi "has said numerous times that it has been a joy to return to live shows for the band," and that updated information would follow.
What it isn't
The reason this show ending early registered as news rather than a footnote is the tour it belongs to. The Forever Tour, which launched July 7, is Bon Jovi's return to the road four years after surgery for a strained vocal cord forced him to stop touring.
Neither the singer nor his representatives have linked Thursday to that. The stated cause is a sinus infection — a common illness that makes singing difficult for reasons of congestion and pressure rather than damage to the vocal cords themselves. The two are medically distinct, and it is worth being precise about that given how quickly the alternative reading travels.
Bon Jovi's own comment from the stage — "I feel great" — points the same way, and he told People in June that he was "fully recovered." "It was longer than I'd ever expected, but it had to be right," he said of the recovery. "We never lost faith."
There was one small piece of stagecraft that fit the circumstances: Pat Monahan of Train, who joined for "Livin' on a Prayer," took over the vocal partway through the song.
What ticket holders should know
No rescheduled date has been announced. Bon Jovi's instruction from the stage was to hold onto ticket stubs, and the band said further information was coming.
The practical advice is to wait for official word from the band, Madison Square Garden and your original point of purchase, rather than acting on resale listings or secondhand claims about refunds. Arena rescheduling for a residency date is a logistical exercise, and it usually takes more than a day to sort out.
What's left on the tour
Thursday was the eighth of nine Madison Square Garden dates. The ninth was scheduled for Sunday, and the band is then set to close the tour with five shows in the United Kingdom across August and September.
Whether Sunday goes ahead as planned is the immediate question, and it had not been addressed as of Friday.
For a band whose frontman spent four years unable to tour, cutting a show short is a comparatively small setback — and the way he handled it, staying on stage for 15 songs and apologizing rather than cancelling outright, is closer to the story than the 90 minutes are.
