What makes the team sheet interesting is who is not on it. Manager Hansi Flick is working with a heavily depleted squad, and the result is a rare, extended look at the club's youth pipeline.
A makeshift, academy-laden lineup
The core of Barcelona's first team is absent. The eight players who were part of Spain's World Cup-winning squad — among them Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, Eric García, Pau Cubarsí and goalkeeper Joan García — are still on their post-tournament break and are due back in training only shortly. Barcelona reportedly trained with 17 youth-team players ahead of the fixture, and the expected side pairs a few senior names — goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny and defender Andreas Christensen among them — with a wave of academy and fringe talent, including the highly rated winger Roony Bardghji and Shane Kluivert, son of the former Barça striker Patrick Kluivert. Flick has also signaled he may use two largely different elevens across the two halves, maximizing minutes for a large group.
CE Europa, briefly back in the spotlight
For CE Europa, this is an occasion. The club competes in the Primera Federación, Spain's third tier, but it is one of the stronger sides in Catalan football and, like Barcelona, a founding member of the Spanish league nearly a century ago. Coach Josep Maria Gené is expected to take the game seriously rather than sit back entirely, using it to test his group against elite opposition. Their squad even carries a familiar surname: Pedro José Cancelo, brother of the international full-back João Cancelo.
The head-to-head is a genuine curiosity. Barcelona and Europa met repeatedly in the late 1920s and early 1930s, across the league and the Copa del Rey, before the fixture vanished from the calendar for the better part of a century. Friday reunites them for the first time since that era — a footnote of a match on paper, but one with deeper roots than most summer friendlies.
What it's really for
None of this is about the scoreline. Barcelona's summer is about integrating new arrivals — the club has moved for German forward Karim Adeyemi and teenage Belgian prospect Jesse Bisiwu, among others — and building fitness before the competitive season, all while the futures of some senior players remain unsettled. A behind-closed-doors run-out against a willing lower-division neighbor is a controlled way to start that process and to give the academy a stage.
